Strawbales, Sky Tombs & Sichuan Pepper; A Green Building Travelogue in China. January 27th 10:30AM

Local eco-architect, Kelly Lerner, and sustainability diva, Alli Kingfisher will share slides of their recent trip to Sichuan Procince in China to build strawbale homes after the 2008 earthquake that killed 70,000 and left up to 11 million homeless.  The travelogue also includes: Jiuzaigou National Park, Tibetan vernacular architecture and a Tibetan Dancing and Horse racing festival.

Cultivating Success: Sustainable Small Farm Classes

Running a sustainable farming operation can be a challenge, especially in tough economic times.  Whether you’ve been farming for years, or have a dream of beginning or adding a new farm-based enterprise, you’ll learn exciting new tools & strategies for farm or farm business profitability with the Cultivating SuccessTM series of entrepreneurship classes.

The program courses include Sustainable Small Farming & Ranching, and Agricultural Entrepreneurship & Business Planning.  The 12 to 14-week evening courses feature a full line-up of guest speakers, including university experts and successful farm entrepreneurs. Courses are offered by the Cultivating Success Program, a collaboration of Washington State University, the University of Idaho and the non-profit organization Rural Roots, and are taught through County Extension.  The costs of the courses vary, but are typically between $150-250.

Earth Day Spokane—Takin’ it to the Streets

When: Saturday, April 17th, 2010 from 11a.m. to Midnight

· Community booths, vendors, and music/performance outside from 11a.m. to approximately 5 p.m.

· Live music, performers, and food/beverage vendors inside the Community Building Warehouse until midnight.

Where: Main Street (between Browne and Division).

Come Celebrate Mother Earth with Us for the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day!

* Dozens of FREE Earth-Friendly Activities for children of all ages, including: planting veggies, building birdfeeders, recycled art projects, sidewalk chalk art, face painting, costume/drum making for the procession of the species, and MUCH more! The WSU Raptor Club will be there with rescued owls and other raptors!
* Live music, roller derby, belly dancing, spoken word and other performance art! Local food vendors will be there all day!
* Art, art and more art! Including: the demolition and reconstruction of seven retired pianos destined for the waste-to-energy plant. They will be re-assembled into one recycled music-making monster!
* FREE admission to films at the Magic Lantern Theater!
* Tours of the Main Market, Community Building and the Saranac Building (the first Platinum Certified Green Building in Spokane!). And demonstrations/activities by dozens of local businesses!

Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce Eco-nomics Expo, January 13

The Eco-nomice Expo will feature Matt Miller of The Nature Conservancy as the keynote speaker from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, followed by a number of informational sessions between 1:00 and 4:00 pm.  The informational sessions will cover energy practices, and green residential and construction programs.  The trade show portion of the Expo will be open from 1:00 to 7:00 pm for Chamber member businesses, trade show participants, and the general public.  Additionally, the Chamber will be holding an open house from 4:00 to 7:00 pm to present the sustainable and green practices it has implemented and its vision for pursuing a sustainable and green business model.

Green Drinks at SNAP January 12, 2010

Spokane Green Drinks events are held the 2nd Tuesday of each month starting at 5:30pm at various locations. Green Drinks is a monthly, free and informal networking events for “eco-professionals” and anyone interested in conversation, conservation and/or cocktails.
